No More Oil and Acne On Skin With These Powerful Steps

If we have oily skin, we often face acne, don’t we??

Skin is oily when sebaceous glands overproduce sebum. Sebum is an oily, waxy substance made of fats.

Though Sebum is good, because not only it protects our skin by creating a barrier, also it keeps our skin hydrated and healthy, which means wrinkles don’t appear so early on oily skin. But still, excess sebum might make our skin super oily, clogging our pores and thus resulting in acne.

I understand it, as several times I have encountered this, but one incident really took off my patience. Keep on reading to know what it was.

My Pic (2016), when I had this breakout

Now, the biggest question every victim of acne asks is, “Is there any way to stop it?? “

Well, yes!!!!! If not 100%, then at least you can control it. Treat your acne and oily skin in the following way, something I have done in my life, & Literally, I have achieved good results.

Me in 2021. This is my skin, absolutely clear, very small hard to notice pits on my cheeks, but never suffered again with any big acne. In the case of smaller acne, they go away by the steps I have mentioned below.
  1. Wash your face at least twice a day
  2. Using Toners or astringents
  3. Using water-based skin care products
  4. Using medicated pads / blotting paper
  5. No harsh scrubbing on skin
  6. Using masks and clays on special occasions
  7. Using acne treatments/exfoliating products regularly
  8. Safe home remedies
  9. Check your diet, water intake & sleeping pattern
  10. Talk to your dermatologist

Wash your face at least twice a day

I have a habit of washing my face twice. I can’t go to sleep without cleansing my face.

This is a very simple step that you can take. You need to use a mild cleanser to ensure it doesn’t take off natural oil from your skin, leaving skin dry, but at the same time, it cleans up the pores properly.

Choose foaming facial cleansers over cream-based or lotion cleansers. Foaming facials cleanses away excess oil very well and leave the skin feeling fresh and clean.

Wash your face in the morning & night before going to bed. Also, cleanse your face after you sweat, like after an intense workout, etc.

Remember not to over-cleanse your skin, as it can irritate your skin. Since acne isn’t caused by oily or dirty skin, washing it frequently will not clear the breakouts.

Using Toners/Astringent

I always wondered if this could help me with my acne, but after giving it a try, I have made it an important part of my skincare regimen.

Toners or astringent toners are again an amazing way to control oil. Astringents help remove excess oil from the skin and reduce the size of the pores.

Toners/astringents should be used after cleansing your face and before applying moisturizer or any acne treatment cream. Some astringents have ingredients like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, that can help clear breakouts too.

Take some drop on a cotton ball or cotton pad, & gently apply it on your forehead, nose, cheeks & chin (basically, area, that becomes oily).

Of course, you don’t have to go for a very expensive brand. Just find one, natural ingredient-based.

Using Oil-Free & Water-based Skincare products

This is something I have learned with time that I was not giving attention to such a minute but very important aspect of skincare.

You know, when you have oily skin, don’t go for oil-based skincare products, because these are going to add on more oil to your skin & will worsen the situation.

Instead, choose “oil-free” & “water-based” skincare products. Water-based products use a gel base & thus, don’t leave any heavy residue on the skin.

You can also look for the term “non-comedogenic”. These products don’t clog the pores much, thus fewer chances of any acne breakout.

Following are the products you must keep in your vanity kit:

  • MOISTURISER: Many think one should avoid moisturiser if they have oily skin, but wait… why???? Just because you have oily skin, you think you don’t need moisturiser?? Hey, you always need it to hydrate your skin to look at your best. Just avoid heavy oil-based one.
  • OIL-FREE SUNSCREEN: The key to a healthy skin is to protect it from harmful UV rays. And thus can be done, by using an oil-free sunscreen lotion. It is a must have.
  • OIL- FREE MAKEUP: The various makeup products that you use like foundation, concealer, should be oil free or water-based to avoid any cakey look. None of us wants to look Zombie at the end of the day…. LOL!!!!

Using Medicated Pads/Blotting Paper

Medicated pads might be a new term to you. These are the pads medicated with salicylic acid, glycolic acid, etc. Basically, ingredients that cut down the excess oil in our skin.

Blotting paper is something almost all of us know about. Cosmetic blotting papers are a big help in removing excess oil because it doesn’t dry out the skin. You can also use some lightly powdered blotting papers to further reduce shine.

Both these options are easy to carry and convenient to use. You can even carry them in your purse, and apply them on the oily areas on your face like forehead, nose chin. Just don’t rub it, but press it against the skin for a few seconds.

No Harsh Scrubbing On Face

So, If you also think, that rubbing your skin will help in reducing acne and oil, will clean the pores, will make your skin glow, you are absolutely wrong.

Rubbing with an abrasive scrub, or washcloths or pads, neither reduce the oil nor improve your acne. Instead, these will disturb your skin badly. Be gentle to your skin, never do it.

Using Masks and Clay on Special Occasions

Whenever there is a Shaadi ceremony, or a party, or a festival, I want to be my best version. But, acne & oily skin might create trouble.

So, at that special time, I usually prefer to go for a mask and/or clay. These are powerful in drawing out the oil and cleansing the pores.

But, they can overdry your skin, so don’t use these often & keep them for big events only like weddings, birthday parties or for some very important day.

Using acne treatments or exfoliating products regularly

I have experienced that regular exfoliation has really made a great change in the size of my pores making them look smaller. While We can’t permanently shrink our pores, we can still reduce the excess oil using these products, which eventually helps in reducing the size of the pores (though temporarily).

Acne treatments are best to treat acne breakouts. These also reduce excess oil, thus making the pores smaller & treating the breakouts.

Topical retinoids & over-the-counter salicylic acid are great at minimizing the size of the pores.

Safe Home Remedies

So, we all are aware of our old Nani ke nuskhe. Whenever I had small acne breakouts, something I knew I can control, I have always gone for the home remedies.

Home remedies are safe, cost-effective & you can do it anytime as ingredients are almost available in your kitchen. Some very common ingredients that you must ensure you have to treat acne & oil are Multani mitti, Chandan powder, besan, gulab jal, haldi, raw milk, lemon, etc.

I suggest you try some homemade face packs before going for any cosmetic cream. These are good to treat acne at the initial stage.

Check your diet, water intake & sleeping pattern

This is highly important, not just to treat acne and oily skin, but also to keep our overall health perfect. I specifically gave attention to what I am eating, when & how, how much water I am drinking in a day, & my sleep pattern, since I don’t sleep much (no… I am not an insomniac, but naturally don’t sleep much).

We should have a balanced diet and must avoid fried and spicy food. Also, we must give attention to our gut health, coz it has a direct connection with our mind, & if there is any gut issue, we can even develop stress, which many times, become a reason for acne breakouts.

Detoxification of the body is equally important, so drink a sufficient amount of water, to keep the body hydrated and free from toxins.

Again, if you don’t sleep well, it can result in stress. A sound sleep is a key for healthy skin.

Talk to your Dermatologist

So, back in 2016, I suffered from a breakout, which was stubborn & every above-mentioned step failed. Generally, my acne used to go away very easily without any mark, but it didn’t.

My 2016 picture, face covered with various big & small acne.

So finally I went to see a dermatologist, who diagnosed me properly and told me the reason behind it. So, after 6 months of treatment, I got rid of that acne (though it left small pits on my face…)

After Treatment (2017)

So, if all the steps you have tried, But nothing is working, then you must talk to a skin specialist. This way, you’ll be able to find out the real factors causing breakouts.
